Extreme calorie cuts and muscle loss

BMR is the energy a body uses at complete rest. The BMR calculator on this site estimates that floor with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. It is not a dinner target. People who “eat at BMR to speed things up” are eating as if they will lie still all day. They will not. They will walk to a shop, stand at a sink, and climb a stair. The gap is paid by hunger, fatigue, and often muscle.
The photograph is a bowl of thin broth and two rice cakes on a large empty table. That is what “eating at BMR” looks like on a plate once you stop calling it a protocol.
What BMR is for
BMR helps you understand why a very low printed calorie target is rarely a full day of adult life. The calorie calculator adds activity so the number is closer to what a waking person uses. Even that number is an estimate. Medicines, thyroid disease, recovery from illness, and a job that is on your feet all move the true figure. Recalculating every morning does not make the estimate wiser.
A modest change is a small step below estimated maintenance — often a few hundred calories — built from food you will still cook next month. That is the meal framework, not a broth week. Crash diets fail for the same reason extreme cuts fail: the body treats famine as famine.
Muscle is not optional decoration
Muscle is how you stand up from a chair at seventy. It is also metabolically active tissue. Severe cuts shrink it. The scale may fall. Strength falls with it. Walking minutes drop because the walk feels larger. People then do less, eat even less, and call the stall “starvation mode.” The plainer sentence is: you are under-eating and under-moving, and the measurement that mattered — function — got worse.
If joints already limit the week, an extreme cut is a second tax. Keep the knee, hip, and back work. Eat enough protein that the session is not performed on fumes; the protein calculator and protein at meals exist for that reason.
Hormones, cold, and mood
Very low intake can disturb sleep, lower mood, and make a room feel colder. Menstrual cycles can change. None of those is a badge. They are signals to eat more food, not to add a stimulant tea. See shortcuts if a product is being sold as a way to stay in the gap.
Resting heart rate that is new and odd, fainting, or chest pain is urgent care, not another calculator session. Wearables will not sort it; read what a watch cannot say.
How to use the tools without turning them into a crash
Open BMR to learn the floor. Open calories to see a waking estimate. Open BMI once as a size snapshot, then read where the index fails. Write waist and walking minutes on the metrics page. Close the tabs. Cook. If the only way the numbers “work” is broth and crackers, the plan is the problem.
Clinicians sometimes use low-energy diets under supervision for specific medical situations. That is a clinic. A static website is not that clinic. We will not print a 1,000-calorie menu here.
Stepping out without a rebound week
Add food in planned steps. Protein first — eggs, yogurt, tins, beans. Then a starch you digest. Then oil you can see. Vegetables can stay abundant; they were never the missing piece. Do not swing from broth to two days of bakery panic. If that swing already feels automatic, get clinical help rather than another printed target.
Expect the scale to rise as glycogen and water return. That rise is not a failure of the step-out. Judge clothes, walking minutes, and mood over two weeks. Keep breakfasts on a pattern from the breakfast page so mornings do not become a second crash.
Office days and the hidden movement you already do
Even a “desk day” is not BMR. You walk to a bathroom. You stand to cook. You carry a bag. Those pieces are why the calorie calculator exists as a separate tool from BMR. Using BMR as a target on an office day still underfeeds the day you actually lived. If your job is on your feet — retail, care work, a kitchen — the gap is larger and the risk of an extreme cut is larger with it.
People then add caffeine and a tight schedule to paper over the gap. That is not metabolic cleverness. That is a week that breaks on Thursday. Put food on the calendar the way you put meetings on it. The budget grocery list is how the food exists when willpower is tired.
Can I eat at BMR on rest days only?
Rest days still include sitting, standing and thinking. Treat BMR as a floor you stay above, not as a rest-day budget.
Why is my watch showing a huge calorie burn?
Wrist estimates are often optimistic. Do not eat a crash plus a watch bonus. Use the on-site calorie tool as a planning range.
Is protein powder enough if calories are tiny?
Powder is not a week of food. You still need plants, fats you can see, and enough total energy that training is not theatre.
What if a diet book said BMR is the target?
Books are not your clinician. Compare the claim with the BMR definition: energy at complete rest.
How fast should I raise intake?
Fast enough that sleep and training improve within a week or two, slow enough that the gut is not shocked. There is no universal gram chart on a static site.
Mifflin-St Jeor is a resting-energy estimate with individual error. Activity above rest is not optional in adult life. Very-low-energy diets belong in supervised settings when they belong at all.
Leave the broth on the photograph. Dinner can be a plate.
